The catch? Contals is new.
Only people who create and organize boards pay – volunteers are free on every plan.
Pastoral care content does not belong in Contals, and Cloudflare is a US company; the data protection kit explains what that means.
The full picture: costs, export, cancelling, where data lives
- What it costs
- Full members (people who create and organize boards) pay per month. Volunteers, guests and viewers are free on every plan, forever. A small team uses Contals for free: up to 5 full members and 10 active boards. On the free plan, notifications arrive in the app, by push and in the weekly summary e-mail. A free organization nobody uses for 90 days is paused until an owner signs in again. Prices are early-access prices and become final before the public launch.
- Your data stays yours
- Export a board or a workspace as JSON at any time, on every plan – cards, comments, Power-Up data and the activity of the last 13 months; the whole organization in one file on Team and Business. No support ticket, no fee.
- Leaving is easy
- Cancel any time; paid plans run to the end of the period, then the organization continues on the free plan – nothing is deleted. An organization is deleted only when an owner asks for it, 30 days later; deleting your account removes your personal data after a 30-day grace period. Billing records are kept only as long as tax law requires.
- Where your data lives
- Board data, the database and backups are stored in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction; a second, encrypted copy of the backups lies at DigitalOcean in Frankfurt (Germany). Cloudflare is a US company; we say “EU data residency”, not “sovereign”. Details on the security page.
- How we make money
- From full members on paid plans. No ads, no selling or sharing of data, no tracking cookies, no metered AI credits. Visits to the website and the sign-in pages are counted with privacy-friendly, cookieless statistics (Fathom); signed-in pages load none.
Four pay. 30 volunteers don’t.
Registered churches can even get the Team plan free for up to 15 full members, on request.

Questions and answers
Is Contals free for churches?
Small churches with up to 5 full members use the free plan, and volunteers are free on every plan. Nonprofit pricing is on request, for churches and charities: registered churches, charities and associations ask for it on their organization’s billing page and get the Team plan free for up to 15 full members and 50 % off paid plans beyond that. Prices are early-access prices and become final before the public launch.
Is Contals suitable for sensitive church data?
Contals stores data in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction, boards are private by default and guests see only the boards they are invited to. Counselling content and anything under pastoral or professional secrecy does not belong in Contals, wherever you are; for follow-up boards use private boards with minimal content. Cloudflare is a US company, so church bodies with stricter public-law rules – for example the Swiss cantonal churches – can use Contals only for non-sensitive coordination. Details, the data processing agreement and a guide for sensitive boards are in the data protection kit.
Does Contals replace ChurchTools or Planning Center?
No. Contals is for projects, events and ministry tasks; member records, giving and service planning stay in your church management system.
What can volunteers do?
Volunteers see the boards shared with them, comment, tick checklist items, take open ones and mark the cards assigned to them as done. They cannot create boards or change their structure, which keeps the free role free.
Do volunteers need an account?
To work on boards, yes: a free account confirmed by e-mail. They accept the invitation link and can sign in with a link instead of a password. To answer a date poll, they need no account at all.
