Questions and answers

Which Trello alternative is free?

Wekan is open source (MIT license) and free if you run it yourself; so is Planka Community. Hosted free plans come from Contals (5 full members, 10 active boards, unlimited helpers), ClickUp (unlimited members, 60 MB storage), Notion (unlimited for individuals, a block limit for 2+ members), MeisterTask (up to 3 projects), Asana (2 users) and monday.com (2 seats, 3 boards). Microsoft Planner is included in Microsoft 365, which eligible nonprofits get free for their staff.

Which Trello alternative stores the data in the EU?

MeisterTask names a data center in Frankfurt; Contals stores data under EU jurisdiction at Cloudflare, a US company. Microsoft 365, and with it Planner, falls under the EU Data Boundary when the organization signed up in the EU or EFTA. Notion offers EU data residency on the Enterprise plan, Asana as an Enterprise add-on, ClickUp on Enterprise. Wekan and Planka live wherever you run them.

Which Trello alternative suits churches and clubs with volunteers?

If all staff have a Microsoft account, Planner is the obvious choice: Microsoft 365 Business Basic is free for eligible nonprofits, but according to Microsoft it does not cover volunteers. If many volunteers take part, Contals only bills full members – volunteers, guests and viewers are free, and registered churches and charities get Team free on request for up to 15 full members.
