The catch? Contals is new.
Only teachers who organize boards pay – parents and helpers are free on every plan.
Grades and sensitive pupil data belong in the school’s systems, not in Contals.
The full picture: costs, export, cancelling, where data lives
- What it costs
- Full members (people who create and organize boards) pay per month. Volunteers, guests and viewers are free on every plan, forever. A small team uses Contals for free: up to 5 full members and 10 active boards. On the free plan, notifications arrive in the app, by push and in the weekly summary e-mail. A free organization nobody uses for 90 days is paused until an owner signs in again. Prices are early-access prices and become final before the public launch.
- Your data stays yours
- Export a board or a workspace as JSON at any time, on every plan – cards, comments, Power-Up data and the activity of the last 13 months; the whole organization in one file on Team and Business. No support ticket, no fee.
- Leaving is easy
- Cancel any time; paid plans run to the end of the period, then the organization continues on the free plan – nothing is deleted. An organization is deleted only when an owner asks for it, 30 days later; deleting your account removes your personal data after a 30-day grace period. Billing records are kept only as long as tax law requires.
- Where your data lives
- Board data, the database and backups are stored in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction; a second, encrypted copy of the backups lies at DigitalOcean in Frankfurt (Germany). Cloudflare is a US company; we say “EU data residency”, not “sovereign”. Details on the security page.
- How we make money
- From full members on paid plans. No ads, no selling or sharing of data, no tracking cookies, no metered AI credits. Visits to the website and the sign-in pages are counted with privacy-friendly, cookieless statistics (Fathom); signed-in pages load none.
Eight pay. 60 parents don’t.
Parents read the class board and help at events – free, on any number of boards.

Mon 12:15
A colleague takes “Book the bus” and sets the date.

Fri 16:00
The trip card is done – without a reminder e-mail.
Without one place
- A year plan only one person keeps up.
- Consent forms on paper.
- Parents’ questions by e-mail.
With Contals
- A board per class and project.
- Checklists show what has come back.

Questions and answers
Can pupils use Contals?
Pupils from 16 can have their own account; younger pupils only with the consent of a parent or guardian. Contals asks for no birth date. Many classes simply work with a board the teacher keeps, which parents read as viewers.
Do parents need to pay or install anything?
No. Parents join for free as viewers or volunteers – with an invite link or a QR code – and use Contals in the browser; the app can be installed on the phone if they like.
Where are the data stored?
Board data, the database and backups are stored in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction; a second, encrypted copy of the backups lies at DigitalOcean in Frankfurt. Keep grades and sensitive pupil data in your school’s own systems.
Are there templates for school?
Yes: School year (class) and Project week, both in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, free on every plan. Each creates a board with lists, cards, checklists and dates.
Can a school get nonprofit pricing?
Nonprofit pricing is for registered churches, charities and associations, and we review each request. A school run by a registered association or foundation, or a parents’ association, can ask for it on its organization’s billing page: the Team plan free for up to 15 full members and 50 % off paid plans beyond that. For public schools we decide per request. Parents and helpers are free as volunteers or viewers anyway.
