Import from other tools
Contals imports boards from Asana, Jira, monday.com, ClickUp, Notion and Wekan, from any CSV or Excel file, and from its own export. Sections or statuses become lists, tasks become cards, subtasks become checklist items, tags become labels, people are matched by e-mail or name, and other columns become custom fields. You see every choice before anything is imported. For Trello, see Switch from Trello.
1. Export from your tool
Section titled “1. Export from your tool”| Tool | Where | File |
|---|---|---|
| Asana | Project → arrow next to its name → Export/Print → CSV | .csv |
| Jira | Filters → search the issues → Export → Export Excel CSV (all fields) | .csv |
| monday.com | Board menu (…) → More actions → Export board to Excel | .xlsx |
| ClickUp | List or space settings (…) → Export → CSV, all columns | .csv |
| Notion | Database ••• → Export → Markdown & CSV, then unzip | the database’s .csv |
| Wekan | Board menu → Export board → JSON | .json |
| Any spreadsheet | Save as CSV (comma or semicolon) or Excel; first row = column names | .csv, .xlsx |
| Contals | Board or workspace settings → Export → Download | .json |
2. Choose the source and the file
Section titled “2. Choose the source and the file”Boards → the import icon next to your workspace’s name (or workspace settings → Import boards) → choose the tool → choose the file. The file is read in your browser; nothing is imported before you confirm.
3. Check what each column means
Section titled “3. Check what each column means”For spreadsheets (all tools except Wekan and Contals) you see every column with two sample values and its meaning. The preset for your tool fills them in; change anything that is not right:
- Card title (required), Description, Labels (tags) – several values separated by commas, Comments, Checklist items (one per line), Links (attachments), Done (yes/no), Archived.
- Assignees – names or e-mail addresses; Assignee e-mail pairs an address with a name column.
- Due date, Start date, Created on, Completed on – most date formats are understood (2025-03-15, 15.03.2025, 3/15/2025, March 15, 2025, Excel dates).
- List (status, section) – one list per value, in the order they appear; lists named like “Done” come last and their cards are done.
- ID – lets a later import of the same file add only new rows. Parent – a row with a parent becomes a checklist item of the parent card (“Subtasks”); Second ID helps when the parent column refers to another ID column (Jira’s issue ID).
- Field: text, number, date, checkbox or dropdown – becomes a custom field of the board.
- Do not import – the column is left out.
The line under the table shows how many cards in how many lists the mapping produces.
4. Preview, people and options
Section titled “4. Preview, people and options”The preview shows the counts, the lists and labels. For every person found in the file, choose who it is in your workspace, invite them by e-mail, or nobody. No account is ever created without the person’s consent. Then choose whether archived items come along and who can see the board.
5. Start
Section titled “5. Start”The import runs on the server; a progress bar shows how far it is and you can leave the page. The result page shows what was imported and what to check.
What each tool brings
Section titled “What each tool brings”- Asana: sections → lists, subtasks → checklist items (parent by name or task ID), tags → labels, assignee with e-mail, due and start dates, “Completed At” → done, custom columns → custom fields.
- Jira: status → lists, sub-tasks → checklist items, labels and components → labels, resolution → done, comments with author and date, priority, issue type and sprint → dropdown fields, story points → number field.
- monday.com: groups → lists, subitems → checklist items, people → assignees, Status → dropdown field (a “Done” status completes the card), date or timeline → due date, other columns → fields.
- ClickUp: status → lists, subtasks → checklist items, tags → labels, checklists, attachments as links, dates, priority → dropdown field.
- Notion: the title column → card title, Status → lists, people, dates (also ranges: the end is the due date), multi-select → labels, the Done checkbox. Page content is not part of Notion’s CSV.
- Wekan: lists with WIP limits, cards, labels, checklists, comments, members with e-mail, custom fields and votes.
- Contals export: a board restored or copied into this workspace, with the same people when they are members here; the history starts anew. Checklist items that became cards keep their link to the card, and blocked-by links stay. An archived board comes back as a normal board.
Limits
Section titled “Limits”A board holds up to 5,000 cards, 100 lists and 50 labels. When a file is larger, the preview says so before anything is imported – leave out archived items or split the board in the source. Attachments become links. Files uploaded to Trello can be copied into Contals after the import, with a Trello API key (Switch from Trello); other tools’ files stay links.
Importing again
Section titled “Importing again”Imported the same file (or board) before? Contals recognizes it and offers to add only what is new: rows already imported are left as they are, with your changes, and nothing is duplicated. With an ID column this works even when rows were edited or reordered in the meantime; without one, Contals recognizes a row by its position and title.
