Notifications in the app, by push and by e-mail
Contals keeps notifications calm: the inbox collects what concerns you, a push notification can tell you on your phone or computer, single e-mails come collected into one, and a summary e-mail – weekly by default – lists what waits for you. Everything is set on one page: Profile → Summary e-mail and notifications.
What you hear about, and where
Section titled “What you hear about, and where”For each kind of notification you choose In the app, Push and E-mail:
| Notification | By default |
|---|---|
| Assigned to me – cards and checklist items | in the app, push, e-mail |
| Mentioned – someone @-mentions you in a comment or a description (mentions) | in the app, push, e-mail |
| Due reminders | in the app, push, e-mail |
| Comments on my cards | in the app, push |
| Invitations | in the app and by e-mail – always; push |
| Status updates of boards I follow | in the app |
| Power-Ups – polls, bookings, cards that can start | in the app |
Off in the app means off everywhere: push notifications and e-mails deliver what is in your inbox. Invitations always come by e-mail and appear on your home page. The boards you follow are the ones you are a member of, marked as favorite or opened in the last 90 days. In the simple view the page shows this device, one switch per kind (Tell me when) and how often the summary comes; Show all options opens the rest (time zone, quiet hours, reminders, the summary’s details). People whose roles are all free see no rows for status reminders and Power-Ups – those never reach them.
Push notifications
Section titled “Push notifications”Push notifications are switched on per device under This device – how, and what iPhone and iPad need, is in Install the app and turn on push. A notification says what happened, on which card and board, and opens the card when you tap it. Several notifications about the same card replace each other; more than three at once become one (“4 new notifications”) that opens the inbox. What you read in the app within half a minute is not pushed.
Under Lock screen, Minimal hides the names of cards, boards and people – the notification only says what kind of news is waiting. Notifications about confidential boards are always minimal.
Single e-mails, collected
Section titled “Single e-mails, collected”Under E-mails of single notifications you choose how long notifications collect before one e-mail goes out: 15 minutes, 30 minutes or 1 hour from the first one, never more than one e-mail per window. Only what you have not read in Contals is in it. Single e-mails are part of the paid plans; on the free plan, notifications arrive in the app, by push and in the summary e-mail – the settings page tells you when this applies.
Quiet hours
Section titled “Quiet hours”Keep quiet hours is on by default, From 21:00 Until 07:00 in your time zone: no push notifications and no notification e-mails during these hours. The e-mails wait until the quiet hours end. Push notifications from that time are not sent afterwards – they are in your inbox and in the next e-mail. The summary e-mail keeps its own day and time.
Due reminders
Section titled “Due reminders”For cards assigned to you that have a due date. Under Due reminders choose your default under Remind me – No reminder, On the due day, 1 day before (the default), 2 days before or 1 week before – and the time under At (08:00 by default), in your time zone. When the due date has a time (a rehearsal at 19:30), the reminder says it (“due today at 19:30”), and On the due day never comes later than an hour before that time – for a card due at 07:00 it comes at 06:00.
On a card, Reminder next to the due date sets the reminder for everyone assigned: Each person’s default, No reminder, a number of days, or At a set time with a date and time. The reminder arrives in the app, by push or by e-mail, as each person chose for Due reminders. No reminder comes for a card that is done or archived, that is no longer assigned to you, or when the board switched the due dates Power-Up off.
The summary e-mail
Section titled “The summary e-mail”By default it arrives once a week, on Monday at 07:30 in your time zone. It contains:
- Your cards and checklist items – overdue, due soon, and your cards without activity for the board’s stale setting (or 30 days), with a hint to mark them done or archive them;
- Changes on your boards – what others changed on boards you are a member of, marked as favorite or opened in the last 90 days: how many cards are new, moved, done or commented, and how many people acted; a new status update as its own line with its state and the board (“Status: At risk – Summer fair”), its text only in the app. Never your own changes;
- Unread notifications – how many are waiting in your inbox.
An empty summary is never sent. Comment texts are never quoted, and links lead straight into the app.
Settings of the summary on the same page:
- Off, Daily or Weekly; the Day and the Time; the Time zone at the top of the page (by default your device’s) also applies to quiet hours and due reminders. On the free plan, a daily summary comes on Mondays and covers the week – unless one of your organizations has a paid plan;
- What the summary includes – changes on your boards, your cards and checklist items, unread notifications;
- Notifications that count – assignments, comments on your cards, checklist items for you, and Power-Ups (polls, bookings, cards that can start).
Messages to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat or Discord are set up per board by its admins (chat notifications).
Unsubscribe with one click
Section titled “Unsubscribe with one click”Every summary and every notification e-mail has an unsubscribe link. Opening it only asks; the button unsubscribes. The settings page then says so: Send summaries again for the summary, Send notification e-mails again for notification e-mails (which also switches e-mail on again for assignments, mentions and due reminders). A second button on the unsubscribe page stops all notification e-mails.
Sign-in links, security notices and invitations still arrive after unsubscribing – they answer something you did or need to act on.

“We could not deliver e-mail to …”
Section titled ““We could not deliver e-mail to …””If an e-mail to you bounced, a banner appears at the top of the app. Try again sends a test e-mail (at most once an hour), Check profile opens your profile, Hide hides the banner for now. If your mail provider reported one of our e-mails as spam, notification e-mails to that address stop; the settings page tells you.
Contals keeps the address and the content of an e-mail only until it is sent; after that only a fingerprint of the address and the delivery status remain.
