# Contals at a glance

Contals is calm work management for teams with many projects and many helpers: Kanban boards like Trello, where volunteers and guests are free and the data stays in the EU. This page collects the key facts as of 16 October 2026, in sentences that can be quoted on their own.

## What it is

- Contals is a web application for organizing work on Kanban boards with lists and cards.
- Contals is similar to Trello: work is organized in boards, lists and cards that can be moved by drag and drop.
- Contals updates boards in real time for everyone who has them open.
- Contals keeps boards readable offline from a local copy when the connection drops; changes need a connection.
- Contals cards have comments, labels, assignees, due dates, checklists whose items each have an owner and a due date, and custom fields.
- Every Contals card has a number with its board’s key in front, such as GEM-12; board admins can rename the key – old references keep working – or hide the numbers.
- The Contals home page starts with “For you”: the person’s cards and checklist items due today or overdue, the next 7 days, what waits for their answer and what changed on their boards, across all their workspaces.
- Contals shows a dashboard and a calendar across all boards of a workspace, and people can save filters that work across boards.
- Contals notifies people in the app, by push notification and by e-mail, chosen for each kind of notification, with quiet hours and reminders before due dates; single notification e-mails, collected into one, are included on Team and Business.
- As of October 2026, Contals has 16 Power-Ups – optional features switched on per board, such as a calendar, automation, a card repeater, date polls and booking pages – all built by the Contals team and included in every plan.

## Who it is for

- Contals is made for teams that coordinate many projects with many helpers, such as churches, charities, associations, volunteer groups, small teams and agencies.
- Contals serves churches, charities, nonprofits and volunteer teams worldwide; its app is in English, German, Swiss German, French, Italian and Spanish, its website in English, German, French, Italian and Spanish, and it bills in Swiss francs, euros or US dollars.
- Volunteers take open cards and checklist items themselves; people without an account can answer a date poll through a public link.
- Contals is not designed for software development teams that need sprints or Git integration.

## Pricing model

- Contals charges per full member and month; full members are people who create and organize boards.
- Volunteers, guests and viewers are free on every Contals plan and on any number of boards.
- The free plan of Contals includes up to 5 full members and 10 active boards (early access; the plans become final before the launch).
- On the free plan of Contals, notifications arrive in the app, by push and in the weekly summary e-mail, with at most 200 notification e-mails per organization and month, the summaries included; sign-in links, confirmations and invitations never count.
- A free Contals organization that nobody uses for 90 days is paused – read-only, nothing deleted – until an owner signs in again; paid plans are never paused.
- Contals bills in Swiss francs (CHF), euros (EUR) or US dollars (USD): an organization picks the currency at its first checkout, and a subscription keeps it.
- Paid plans of Contals cost CHF 4.50 / €4.50 / $4.50 (Team) and CHF 9 / €9 / $9 (Business) per full member and month with annual billing – CHF 54 / €54 / $54 and CHF 108 / €108 / $108 a year – or CHF 5.50 / €5.50 / $5.50 and CHF 11 / €11 / $11 with monthly billing, excluding VAT or sales tax (early-access prices, final before the launch).
- Contals calculates VAT and sales tax with Stripe Tax from the billing address.
- Every new Contals organization gets the Team plan for 14 days without a credit card, then continues on the free plan unless it upgrades; a subscription cancelled during the trial also ends on the free plan.
- Nonprofit pricing is on request, for churches and charities: registered churches, charities and associations ask for it on their organization’s billing page and get the Team plan free for up to 15 full members and 50 % off paid plans beyond that.
- A calendar, a dashboard and views across boards are part of every Contals plan; Trello includes them from Premium ($10). Contals Team costs CHF 4.50 / €4.50 / $4.50 per full member and month with annual billing – just under Trello Standard ($5).
- The free plan of Contals stores 1 GB per organization with files up to 10 MB; Team adds 10 GB per paid full member to a shared pool of at least 50 GB, Business 25 GB per paid full member to at least 250 GB, with files up to 100 MB.
- Contals counts runs of its Automation and Card repeater Power-Ups per organization and month – 500 on the free plan, 5,000 on Team, any number on Business; a rule whose conditions do not hold is not counted, and when the month’s runs are used up, rules pause until the next month with a notice on the board.
- A free Contals organization sends up to 50 e-mail invitations a day; joining through an invite link is not counted.
- AI with an organization’s own model and the dashboard and calendar across boards are included in every Contals plan, the free plan too.
- Contals promises in writing that existing customers keep their price for 12 months, announces price changes 60 days and free-plan changes 6 months in advance, and refunds a first payment within 30 days (see the pricing promise page).
- Contals sells no metered AI credits: an organization connects its own AI provider and pays it directly.

## Hosting and data residency

- Contals runs on Cloudflare Workers.
- Contals stores board data, its database, queues and backups in Cloudflare’s EU jurisdiction.
- Contals keeps a second, encrypted copy of its backups at DigitalOcean in Frankfurt (Germany); DigitalOcean receives only data Contals encrypted.
- Cloudflare, the hosting provider of Contals, is a US company; Contals therefore describes its hosting as EU data residency, not as sovereign hosting.

## Security and privacy

- New boards in Contals are private by default.
- Contals checks every change against the person’s board role on the server before saving it.
- Contals exports boards and workspaces on every plan, and whole organizations on Team and Business, as JSON including the activity of the last 13 months.
- A Contals board keeps 13 months of history; older changes are folded into the board, and their earlier texts are deleted.
- Deleting a Contals account removes the personal data after a 30-day grace period; billing records are kept as long as tax law requires.
- A Contals organization is deleted only when an owner asks for it, 30 days later; it is read-only and exportable until then. When a paid plan ends, the organization continues on the free plan and nothing is deleted.
- Contals records every deletion in a separate ledger with IDs only and applies it again after any restore, so deleted data does not come back from a backup.
- When a comment in Contals is edited or deleted, its earlier text is also removed from the board history and from exports; copies in the tamper-proof archive and in backups remain until their retention ends.
- Contals supports sign-in with a password, a one-time e-mail link, Google, Microsoft and other providers, and single sign-on with SAML 2.0 or OpenID Connect on Team and Business.
- Contals offers two-factor sign-in with an authenticator app and single-use recovery codes, and passkeys; organization owners can require two-factor sign-in of everyone who works in the organization.
- Contals keeps an audit log of role and access changes, exports, deletions, sign-in settings, billing and every opening of a confidential board; organization owners and admins can filter it and download it as CSV on every plan.
- Board admins in Contals can set a retention rule that archives or deletes done cards a chosen number of days after they were completed.
- The Contals website sets no tracking cookies; the website, the docs and the app’s sign-in pages count visits with cookieless statistics (Fathom), and signed-in pages load none.

## Limits

- A Contals board holds up to 5,000 cards, 100 lists and 50 labels, on every plan.
- A Contals card holds up to 500 comments and 20 checklists; a description holds up to 20,000 characters.
- A Contals workspace holds up to 10 active boards on the free plan and unlimited boards on Team and Business (archived boards do not count); a person can create up to 5 workspaces.
- Guests are free on every Contals plan; one board can have up to 250 guests.
- The Contals API allows 60 requests per minute on the free plan, 300 on Team and 1,000 on Business.

## Accessibility

- Contals aims to meet WCAG 2.2 level AA; as of October 2026 it is partially conformant, and its accessibility statement lists the known limitations.
- Contals has a simple view with fewer buttons, larger text, controls of at least 44 pixels and plain words; it is on by default for volunteers, viewers and guests.
- Everything in Contals works with the keyboard, including moving cards and lists without dragging, and the single-key shortcuts can be turned off.

## Platforms, languages, integrations, AI

- Contals runs in modern browsers on desktop and mobile and can be installed as a web app (PWA) with push notifications – on iPhone and iPad from iOS 16.4, once it is on the Home Screen; as of October 2026 there are no native iOS or Android apps.
- The Contals app is available in English, German, Swiss German, French, Italian and Spanish; the help pages and the legal texts are in English and German.
- Contals has a public REST API at https://app.contals.com/api/public/v1 (OpenAPI document: https://app.contals.com/api/public/v1/openapi.json) and an MCP server for AI assistants at https://app.contals.com/mcp; both use personal API tokens.
- Contals works with an organization’s own AI model – OpenAI-compatible, Anthropic or Google Gemini – for an assistant and AI features on cards; AI is off until an owner or admin switches it on, and the organization decides which data may be sent.
- Contals imports boards from Trello (JSON export, workspace export or API – one board or a whole workspace at once), Asana, Jira, monday.com, ClickUp, Notion, Wekan and CSV or Excel files.
- Contals sends notifications to Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat and Discord, offers calendar subscriptions in the iCal format and links cards to files in Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox and other services; it has no Zapier app.
