# Accessibility statement

Contals aims to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, because volunteers of every age use it, mostly on their phones. Today the app is partially conformant: the pages and flows we audited meet level AA, and the known gaps are listed below.

Statement prepared: 15 October 2026

## Conformance status

Partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA. “Partially” means that some parts of the content do not yet fully conform – they are listed under “Known limitations”. Last audit: 2026-10-15.

## How we assessed it

This statement is based on a self-assessment by Unique-P GmbH, which operates Contals: automated checks with axe-core in every test run and a manual review with the keyboard, zoom and the accessibility tree. No external audit has been carried out yet.

## What this statement covers

The Contals app (app.contals.com: sign-in, boards, card details, Power-Ups, settings, imports, templates, invitations, the public booking and date-poll pages), this website and the documentation.

## What we do

- Every page and state of the app is checked automatically with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 A and AA, in light and dark mode, in German and English, and every night also in French (light mode) – a new violation fails our test run.
- Everything works with a keyboard: creating a board, adding, editing and moving cards, commenting, assigning, due dates, Power-Ups and invitations. Cards, lists and checklist items can be moved without dragging, and the single-key shortcuts can be turned off.
- Visible focus everywhere, colours with at least 4.5:1 contrast for text and 3:1 for controls, in every theme (light, dark, high contrast, sepia).
- Page titles, landmarks, labels and live announcements for screen readers (sync status, results, new comments).
- The layout adapts down to 320 pixels and to 400 % zoom; animations stop when the device asks for reduced motion.
- Sign-in without puzzles: password managers and pasting work, and you can sign in with an e-mail link instead of a password.

## Simple view for occasional helpers

People who help now and then can switch on the simple view (profile → Simple view): fewer buttons, larger text, every control at least 44 pixels, plain words, and card details as a full page on phones. It is on by default for volunteers, viewers and guests.

## Known limitations

- Text that people write (card titles, descriptions, comments) is not marked with its language, because Contals does not know it. A screen reader reads it in the language of the interface.
- The calendar month grids (the board calendar and the workspace calendar) are visual grids without table semantics: screen readers hear each day’s full date and its cards in reading order, but not the week rows. The workspace calendar also has an agenda view. Moving a card to another day by dragging also works in the card details (the due date).
- Board lists are a two-dimensional layout and scroll sideways on small screens, as the WCAG reflow exception for such content allows. Every list can also be reached with the arrow keys.
- Some Power-Up settings pages (automation rules, booking types) have long forms that we have checked with automated tests and the keyboard, but not yet with all screen readers.
- We have checked names, roles and states with automated tests and a review of the accessibility tree; tests with people who use assistive technology every day are still to come.

## Technology

Contals relies on HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA. It is tested in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari.
