# Undo and redo

> Undo your last changes on a board with Ctrl+Z or ⌘Z, or with Undo in the message that appears – moves, archiving, renames, labels, people, checklist items, deletions of checklists and labels. What can and cannot be undone, and why.

Press **Ctrl Z** (Windows, Linux) or **⌘ Z** (Mac) on a board to undo your last change there; **Ctrl Shift Z**, **⌘ Shift Z** or **Ctrl Y** redoes it. When you archive or delete something, a message with **Undo** appears at the bottom of the screen as well; it stays for 10 seconds (longer while the pointer rests on it). An undo is a normal change: everyone on the board sees it at once, and the activity shows it with "undone".

## What you can undo

- Moving a card – to another list or within its list – and moving a list
- Archiving a card or a list, and restoring one
- Renaming a card, a list, a checklist or a checklist item
- Marking a card done or open, and ticking a checklist item
- Changing a card's labels or the people assigned to it
- Deleting a checklist (with all its items), a checklist item or a label – they come back exactly as they were
- Turning a checklist item into a card (the card goes to the archive, the item is a plain item again)
- Adding or removing a blocker ([dependencies](/docs/en/power-ups/dependencies/))

Undo goes back step by step through your last 20 changes on this board, in this browser tab. Each board has its own list. Leaving the board and coming back keeps it; reloading the page or signing out clears it.

## When nothing is undone

Undo only changes back what your change changed – and only if it is still as you left it. If someone else (or an automation rule) has changed the same thing since, for example renamed the card again or moved it to another list, nothing happens and Contals says so: their change stays. Changes to other parts of the card stay too – undoing a move keeps a comment someone added meanwhile.

Undo also uses your role **now**: if you are no longer allowed to make the change (your role was lowered, or the board was archived), it is refused.

## What cannot be undone

- **Deleting a comment or a status update.** Their text is erased from the board's history at once; undo never brings an erased text back.
- **Data erasures** – a booking's personal data, a removed poll participant, cards a retention rule deleted.
- Board settings, members and Power-Up switches – change them back on their pages.
- Archiving a whole board – restore it from the [workspace's archive](/docs/en/boards/archive/).

Cards cannot be deleted in Contals – **Archive** is how a card leaves the board, and it can always be restored (undo, or the card details of an archived card).

## In a text field

While you type in a title, a description, a comment or any other field, **Ctrl Z** / **⌘ Z** undoes your typing in that field, as everywhere. The board's undo works when the focus is not in a text field – press **Escape** to leave the field first.

## Archived cards and lists

Archived cards and lists leave the board but are kept. The board's `…` menu (next to **Settings**; on a phone, at the end of the title row) opens **Archived items** in the sidebar: the archived lists with how many cards they hold, and the archived cards, newest first, with a search. **Restore** puts a list or a card back where it was; a click on a card opens its details. People who may archive may restore.
